John Jay High School raises $70K for 140 elementary students

Staff, students take elementary students Christmas shopping

SAN ANTONIO - Some John Jay High School students shared the holiday spirit with 140 elementary students by taking them Christmas shopping.

The students picked out their own presents at a local Big Lots on Tuesday.

“These are less fortunate kids, so they don't necessarily get a Christmas like we do,” said Jessica Gonzalez, President of Jay High School Student Council. “Our school comes together, all organizations. We tried to get everybody involved and this is what ends up coming out of two days.”

Students and staff at John Jay High School said they raised $70,000, enough to take 140 students from seven schools on a shopping spree. Each kid will receive $25 at Big Lots and $25 at Payless to spend on whatever they would like.

Jayla Harris said fake nails are at the top of her wish list.

"I like stuff like that, because I'm a girl and I like pink,” said Harris. “That's my favorite color, pink. Pink, and black and black and yellow."

Instead of nails, Harris left with a doll and clothes.

This is the 45th year the high school has taken other kids Christmas shopping and the event is always a favorite.

“These kids, for them to light up the way they do, as soon as they get these toys, it's a great experience," said Gonzalez.
