Water Balz expandable toy recalled
CPSC warns ingesting water-absorbing toys can block intestines
SAN ANTONIO - Toys that expand to 400 times their original size when placed in water have been recalled after a Humble baby ingested one and required surgery to remove it.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission, www.cpsc.gov, announced the recall of nearly 95,000 Dunecraft Water Balz, Growing Skulls, H2O Orbs "Despicable Me" and Fabulous Flowers calling them a serious ingestion hazard.
When the marble-sized polymer toy is placed in water, it gradually absorbs water and grows to the size of a racquetball, according to the packaging.
When an 8-month-old Humble girl swallowed a candy-colored Water Balz last year, her family said she became very ill, throwing up and becoming dehydrated and listless.
Once at the hospital, a surgeon removed the toy which had swollen in size and blocked her intestine.
The toys were sold at several retailers including Bed Bath and Beyond, Hobby Lobby andn lakeshore Learning Materials.
Parents are urged to take the toys away from children.
