Meals On Wheels, H-E-B hand out turkey dinners
Meals on Wheels looking for volunteers over Christmas holidays
SAN ANTONIO - For many seniors who are homebound, Meals on Wheels is a lifeline for them.
The daily delivery of food is vital to seniors. But on Thursday, folks like Frances Thorne-Coley were treated to something extra - a holiday turkey dinner.
"I'm 74-years-old, 100 percent disabled veteran and this is my lifeline," said a thankful Thorne-Coley, as volunteers handed him his meal.
The turkey and dressing dinner was courtesy of H-E-B's "Feast of Sharing" program.
While the event is scheduled for Saturday, H-E-B prepared 3,500 traditional turkey dinners for Meals on Wheels to hand out Thursday. Meals on Wheels will be closed on Christmas Day and the frozen meals will allow for the seniors to have a Christmas meal.
"We have so many seniors who are living alone and don't have family, so we are treating them to turkey and dressing," said Sharon Baughman, CEO of Christian Senior Services, the organization that runs Meals on Wheels.
Meanwhile, Meals on Wheels sent out a plea for help. More volunteers will be needed throughout the holiday season.
"So many people are going out of town for the holidays; they're closed at work, our kids are out of school," Baughman said. "If their kids are home from school and they want to bring them, that's even better because our seniors don't really get that opportunity to interact with young people.
