SAN ANTONIO - An elementary school along Loop 1604 and a high school off Evans Road make up the latest Judson Independent School District bond issue, an $83 million proposal to be decided in May.
"It's nothing complicated and there are no add-ons and more importantly, there's no tax increase," said Judson ISD spokesman Steve Linscomb.
Linscomb said the school board Wednesday made a conscious decision to keep it simple after a $198 million bond issue failed two years ago.
In advance of the latest proposal, Linscomb said the district conducted a phone survey of Judson voters. Of the nearly 300 who responded, he said 42 percent thought the district was "wasteful and inefficient" in managing money, but 62 percent would support a bond issue with little to no increase in taxes.
"With it being kept simple, I think that will help build confidence," Linscomb said.
He also said the same architect and contractor would be used for both projects that built Rolling Meadows Elementary on Nacogdoches Road.
"That school was built on time, under budget and the first day, everything worked," Linscomb said. "When you have that kind of track record and that kind of history, we want to repeat that."
Lawrence Turgeon, who lives in the district, said he agrees that would be a good move.
"That's very seldom that you ever see anything like that," Turgeon said.
Turgeon also said more schools are needed given the growth in neighborhoods like his.
"They're going to open up another subdivision, so it's going to get pretty crowded really quickly up in this area," Turgeon said.
Another 1,000-plus houses also could get the green light off Evans Road east of Highway 281.
Although other school district enrollments may be growing more, Linscomb said Judson ISD "must do something quickly."
Linscomb said as it is, in another two or three years, Judson High School's current enrollment of 3,400 will top 4,000.
