Sandy Oaks Fire Department to close at midnight

Bexar County ESD No. 6 terminates contract with volunteer fire department

SAN ANTONIO - The Sandy Oaks Volunteer Fire Department will be shutting its doors at the stroke of midnight Monday.

The department was forced to close after the Emergency Services District Number 6 terminated its contract with the department, citing a breech in the agreement.

Taylor Squires, a volunteer firefighter said he is concerned about the response time other fire departments will provide to the area.

"They are going to have longer response times to the area ... because they don't know the area as well," Squires said.

Squires said the fire department hopes to be back in business soon. He plans on meeting with lawyers to discuss options.

The department plans to host a meeting Wednesday at 6 p.m. to let residents know the latest.
