Converse man accused of injuring baby while beating woman

John Pickens, 23, accused of knocking down, dragging mother holding 16-month-old son

Converse resident John Pickens, 23, is accused of punching, knocking down and dragging a woman, all while she was holding her 16-month-old son in her arms.

San Antonio police said the baby was injured in the process. Pickens was arrested Tuesday on a charge of injury to a child.

An arrest affidavit stated that the baby suffered scrapes and bruises during the scuffle.

The affidavit stated that Pickens got physical during an argument with his girlfriend Saturday and began punching the woman while she was holding her 16-month-old in her arms.

The woman fell to the ground, and Pickens began dragging her across the concrete, the affidavit stated. Both she and the baby suffered abrasions, the affidavit stated.

Later, inside the woman’s home, Pickens knocked her onto a couch, causing her to drop the child, the affidavit stated. When officers arrived, Pickens was already gone.

Following his arrest, he was booked into the Bexar County jail with bond set at $5,000.
