Snow closes major West Texas highways

Snow from a winter storm has closed major highways in remote stretches of West Texas.

West Texas west of San Angelo and south of the Midland-Odessa area was under a winter storm warning throughout Thursday. Up to eight inches of snow, with isolated amounts approaching 10 inches, were expected across West Texas as the storm moved across the region.

In the El Paso area, the National Weather Service reported up to 3 inches of snow by nightfall Thursday. Interstate 10 was closed from about 40 miles southeast of El Paso to Van Horn, as was U.S. 62/180 from El Paso's eastern outskirts to the New Mexico border. About 4 to 6 inches was expected between El Paso and the Pecos River, with 8 to 10 inches in the mountains.

The Texas Department of Transportation has a road condition hotline. For the latest information, call 800-452-9292.
