Man arrested in machete attack on dog
Juan Mendiola, 29, arrested on animal cruelty charges
SAN ANTONIO - A dog named Tiger died Wednesday during surgery at Animal Care Services after his owner allegedly struck him repeatedly with a machete.
Juan Mendiola, 29, was arrested on animal cruelty charges Tuesday after police responded to his apartment complex at 6200 NE Loop 410.
Witnesses said they saw Mendiola beating the dog repeatedly with the machete.
The dog survived through the night, but died on the operating table Wednesday morning.
Mendiola faces a misdemeanor charge for now, but the district attorney's office has the option to up that charge to the felony level.
ACS takes donations for animals involved in cruelty cases (for advanced medical, surgeries, etc.). The donation fund is named after a English Bulldog who was severely burned by a homemade Molotov cocktail several years ago.
