Perry: Hard work, challenges ahead for 83rd Texas Legislature

Population growth, water needs among other key issues

From funding for public education to finding money to address the state’s water needs, Texas Gov. Rick Perry says the 83rd session of the Texas legislature is facing a challenging session -- but one he is confident the lawmakers are up to handling.

“You’ve got great growth in a diverse economy,” Perry said. “That’s the good news.”

“The challenges -- a lot of people are moving to the state and that means a lot of pressure on water and on power and on transportation infrastructure,” Perry said.

While some legislators have said that public education was shortchanged during the last session, Perry says he sees no need to make adjustments.

“Looking at the decade of the 2000s, you have seen phenomenal resources go into public education,” Perry said.

He said that education funding has grown three times faster during the decade that the school’s population.

Discussing Texas’ water needs, the governor said the answer is money.

“The funding of the water is the real hat trick, but I think this session we have the will,” Perry said.

The governor repeated his call for budget transparency and continued conservative fiscal policies.
