Father: Bullying at daughter's school out of control

Leakey parent speaking out about incidents at school

LEAKEY, Texas - The father of a Leakey Secondary School student says not enough is being done about bullying at the school.

The latest incident, he says, is the last straw, after someone threatened his daughter with a knife.

And he says he alleged attacker is getting off with what amounts to a slap on the wrist.

On Jan. 4, Jesse Guerra's sixth-grade daughter claims to have been threatened by another student brandishing a pocket knife at Leakey Secondary School.

According to Guerra, bullying is out of control at the school.

"There's been bullying going on at the school for a long time and nothing is ever done," he said. "My son has been bullied before; other kids (also). There's other parents that are tired of it."

Guerra says the alleged bully received what amounted to just four days of in-school suspension, nowhere near enough punishment in his eyes.

"It's a weapon," he said. "This student should be expelled."

Guerra filed charges against the bully at the Real County Sheriff's Department. The department refused to comment on the case other than that it's being processed in the juvenile court system.

Superintendent James Hesson says he takes bullying very seriously but he needs to strike a proper balance when it comes to discipline.

"We don't want to do overkill," he said. "We don't want to under-kill by any means, or over-discipline or under-discipline ... but you've got to be able (to) nurture and give a child time to think about what is happening and find out what the causes (are) and then you can solve a whole lot of problems."

Hesson says the alleged bully was given three days of disciplinary alternative schooling and will have to undergo 17 weeks of counseling.

Guerra says his daughter is afraid to return to school and he wont stop fighting for her.

"This is my daughter," he said. "I'm going to take a stand and I'm going to do what's right and I'm not going to let up."
