Alamo Heights set to lose iconic water tower known as 'Tin Man'
'Tin Man' water tower has been up since 1927, scheduled to come down Monday
ALAMO HEIGHTS, Texas - The city of Alamo Heights will soon be losing one of its most recognized landmarks.
The iconic "Tin Man" water tower, which has been up since 1927, is scheduled to come down on Monday.
The city is planning to demolish the 100,000 gallon water tank, which had been operational until last year.
It was taken out of service because it wasn't compatible with the two newer towers.
Patrick Sullivan, Alamo Heights Public Works Director, said the old tower, even out of operation, needed to be repaired.
"Part of an inspection involved the information that we were given," said Sullivan. "And, subsequently led towards the need to have it repaired or taken down."
Sullivan said to keep the old tower in good repair would cost the city more than $400,000.
With a new city complex going up, he said the old landmark would be in the way of the construction.
"It's in conflict with the footprint of the intended facility," said Sullivan. "Between it being obsolete and needing repair, it's in the way as well."
Peggy Reid, an Alamo Heights resident, said her family has been in Alamo Heights neighborhood for three generations and what she says she remembers most from growing up there is seeing the old water tower.
"I'm sure we got old family movies of us playing in the yard where you can see the tower in the background," Reid said. "We always knew how to get home. You look for the tower."
City leaders are working to try and incorporate some of the old pieces with the new facility, but it will not stand 131 feet high, like Reid had grown accustomed to seeing it.
"It's going to be something not to see it everyday because that's Alamo heights," said Reid. "That tower has been here forever. It's going to be said when it goes."
Sullivan said demolition will begin Monday morning at 8 a.m. and wrap up about 5:30 p.m.
