Mother putting child on East Central bus hit by car

Accident happened on Highway 181 near Max Road

SAN ANTONIO - A woman was injured while putting her child on an East Central Independent School District bus on Highway 181.

Bexar County sheriff's investigators said the driver of a Chrysler PT Cruiser was traveling on Highway 181 South near Max Road around 7 a.m. when the car suddenly veered toward the right shoulder of the highway.

The mother was able to push her child out of the way, but the woman was hit by the vehicle, investigators said. She suffered a broken arm and other injuries and was taken to a hospital.

The child got on the bus, which was full of children, and went to school. The bus had its flashers on and stop sign extended at the time of the accident.

Investigators said the bus driver saw what happened and stopped, but weren't sure if the students on the bus witnessed the accident.

As for the driver of the car, investigators are trying to find out if he fell asleep at the wheel, wasn't paying attention or had some kind of medical emergency.
