Behind the Kitchen Door: Middle Eastern eatery, meat market fail inspection

Cedar's Cafe, Culebra Super Meat Market fail health inspection

SAN ANTONIO - A Middle Eastern restaurant and a well known meat market both located on the West Side failed their recent inspection from San Antonio Metro Health.

Cedar's Cafe located at 7121 New Highway 90 West failed with 40 demerits.

The inspector found various foods including fish, chicken, mac and cheese being stored at unsafe temperatures.

They were asked to provide pest control for gnats and clean up dead insects and the staff was given a reminder that hair restraints aren't optional."

Cedar's Cafe failed an inspection in October as well, but their score was worse this time.

KSAT Behind the Kitchen Door attempted to contact Cedar's Cafe, but no one answered.

Culebra Super Meat Market located at 9107 Marbach Road failed their latest inspection with 34 demerits.

The report stated a chunk of meat was found sitting on a meat slicer. Before the inspector could check its temperature, an employee grabbed it and threw it away.

Cooked carnitas was not being stored at a safe temperature. And the staff was urged to do a better job of keeping kitchen utensils clean and sanitized.

An employee who spoke to KSAT Behind the Kitchen Door said kitchen procedures have changed for the better.

She says they're ready for the inspector to come back and see the improvements they've made.

Four local restaurants received perfect scores during their health inspection. They are:

  • Bill Miller Barbecue on South Zarzamora.
  • Five Guys Burgers and Fries on Loop 1604 near Stone Oak.
  • The Little Taco House on Isom Road.
  • Mama Lee's Soul Food on Valley Hi Drive.
