Woman hopes to raise awareness after sister, brother are murdered
Sonia McKendrick, Milton Lozano were killed in Dec. 2011, says police
SAN ANTONIO - Lillian Morales said her sister and brother were shot and killed on December 28, 2011 by her sister's ex-husband.
"Her ex-husband came in and took her life, as well as my brother's life," said Morales. "So, we lost two."
Police said that William McKendrick, 47, shot Sonia McKendrick, 43, and her brother, Milton Lozano, 57, after he showed up at her home to pick up their 7-year-old son.
However, Morales said the trouble started long before her sister's ex-husband fired those fatal shots.
"The real violence was with my sister who took the beatings and all the abuse, all throughout her relationship with William McKendrick," said Morales.
On Saturday, Morales and her father joined hundreds of others at the 2nd annual Stop the Silence, End the Violence 5K Walk and Run in hopes of helping other women who may find themselves in the same situation.
"That's why we are here, to help raise awareness for other women," said Morales. "And, to keep my sister's memory alive and spread the word that domestic violence isn't something to be taken lightly."
Although Morales said she will never see her sister or her brother again, she's hoping that her efforts to get the word out will help and hopefully save someone's life.
"People say time heals all wounds, but I don't see that yet because it still hurts," said Morales. "But, we know she's resting now. We know she isn't hurting anymore. There's no more pain, no more suffering. She's in the best place she can be, her and my brother."
William McKendrick also shot himself on December 28, 2011, during a standoff with police at his apartment on Broadway. He died that next morning.
The McKendrick's 7-year-old son was not harmed in the shootings.
