SAPD: Shooting, chase stems from shoplifting attempt

Man, woman suspected in shoplifting at CVS Pharmacy on Old Pearsall Road

A pair of shoplifting suspects led police on a wild foot chase on the city's West Side on Monday morning.

Sgt. Christopher Spratley of the San Antonio Police Department said 24-year-old Marlena Ximenez and a 29-year-old man made a run for it after officers approached them outside a CVS Pharmacy in the 5900 block of Old Pearsall Road at 8:20 a.m.

"They went through several yards (and) several houses," Spratley said.

At at one point, the man ran through the inside of a home in the 7500 block of Sweet Valley, catching the homeowner completely off guard.

"He got freaked out and started yelling at the guy to run to get out of the house," Spratley said. "And then he grabbed a handgun and fired off a round outside the house, into the ground."

Police caught up with the pair, who allegedly stole some toiletries from the pharmacy, about three blocks away.

Ximenez was taken into custody and the man was taken to a hospital for difficulty breathing.

Ximenez is facing theft and evading arrest charges. Police said she also has a warrant out for assault.

The male has not yet been charged.

Police said the homeowner was in his rights to protect his property and won't face any charges for firing off his gun.
