Street racing blamed for death of Brandeis student
18-year-old female student killed, 3 others injured
SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio police have identified the 18-year-old student killed in an alleged street racing accident Tuesday as Gabriela Lerma.
Lerma was killed and three other students were hurt during their lunch break.
The teens, who range in age from 16 to 18 years old, are all students at Brandeis High School.
The accident happened on the access road of Loop 1604 near Hausman Road when the student who was driving tried to pass a vehicle, but didn't realize that the vehicle was turning.
The wreck resulted in Lerma and three others being taken to University Hospital.
Pasqual Gonzalez, spokesman for Northside Independent School District, said it is not unusual for students to be out and about during their lunch break, because Brandeis is an open campus.
Gonzalez said grief counselors will be at the school on Wednesday, and that the district is working with authorities to determine who was driving the second vehicle involved in the alleged street racing incident.
