Vigil held for mother, twin sons killed in house fire near San Antonio
Family remembers three killed in fire on Old Pearsall Road
BEXAR COUNTY, Texas - Hundreds of family and friends turned out for a vigil Tuesday evening at the site where 31-year-old Roxanne Moreno-Ordonez and her 14-month-old boys Orlin and Daniel died in a house fire on Monday.
Smoke still smoldered in a corner of the land where three homes once stood. It was the first time since the fire that anyone other than investigators was allowed on the property.
“To be able to see up close and personal the damage and know that three precious lives were lost here, it seems more real for you,” said Debbie Jo Fonseca, a second cousin of Roxanne’s.
“It’s just unbelievable to have our cousin who was very young and her two babies pass away like they did,” said Roxanne’s first cousin David Prouty.
As the sun continued to set, the crowd continued to grow, reaching close to 200 people by nightfall.
“I know we expected great community support. Having grown up in this area, everyone’s real close here in Southwest area but the outpouring is pretty amazing,” said Fonseca.
Father James Janish of Our Lady Queen of Heaven in Macdona led the rosary as well as speaking to the crowd.
“So many times and especially tonight, we’re reduced to silence,” said Janish. “There is not a lot of explanations we can give.”
“We all have questions, ‘what could have been done, what could have changed or how could we have helped out?’” said Prouty. “I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason and in the midst of it God’s in control.”
Sources told KSAT that several witnesses told law enforcement that they saw someone burning trash outside one of the homes that caught fire Monday.
Investigators have not determined a cause and are looking into trash burning as a possibility.
The family has set up an account for anyone wishing to donate to help with funeral costs. People interested in helping can go to or call any Wells Fargo branch and provide donations to the account set up in the name of Roxanne’s mother, Vangie Chaires.
