Bicyclist struck, killed in northeast San Antonio crash

Victim identified as Joshua Ortega, 16

SAN ANTONIO - A 16-year-old boy was struck and killed Wednesday night on a dark stretch of FM 78, and investigators believe the dark street contributed to the fatal accident.

Joshua Ortega was struck around 8 p.m. in the 5900 Block of FM 78 by a Chrysler 300, a San Antonio Police Department report stated.

The driver of the car, Teresa Glendell Nicholas, 47, told officers she didn't see Joshua until she struck him.

The impact sent Joshua flying into the windshield of the car. His bike was pulled under the vehicle and dragged several feet before the car came to a stop with the bike still lodge underneath.

The report stated that Joshua 's bicycle did not have a headlight or tail light and that he was wearing dark clothing.

It is unclear whether Joshua was riding in the roadway or crossing it, but he was hit in the left lane, the police report stated.

"It's not real well lit out here and it's a dangerous time to be on a bike in a main thoroughfare like this," San Antonio Police Department Lt. Scott Bell said at the scene.

Nicholas was not intoxicated and is not expected to face any charges, the police report stated.
