Children's Hospital of San Antonio announces new partnership

Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Children's Hospital come aboard

The move towards two regional children’s hospitals continues in San Antonio.

The University of Texas Health Science Center has yet to break ground on its joint hospital with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Meanwhile, Christus-Santa Rosa is converting its downtown campus and made a major announcement on Thursday.

"We said we would take health care to the next level here (and) today is that day,” announced Pat Carrier, president and CEO of Christus-Santa Rosa Health System.

Children’s Hospital of San Antonio has opted to join forces with Houston powerhouses Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital.

"Our like-minded organizations will work together to provide world class pediatric care right here in the heart of San Antonio,” said Carrier.

Baylor College of Medicine is well known for its research and will serve to recruit and employ physicians for the hospital.

"We're the number one funded organization in the state of Texas,” said CEO and President of Baylor College of Medicine Dr. Paul Klotman. "It’s going to be great for the families of San Antonio to know they don't have to fly somewhere. They can get the best care right here in a great hospital."

As for the Texas Children’s Hospital, they too bring name recognition and will be the consulting and expertise arm of the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio.

"Annually, we perform about 25,000 operations at Texas Children's Hospital and our various facilities,” said Dr. Charles Frazier, surgeon-in-chief at Texas Children’s Hospital.

Thursday's announcement came as the hospital undergoes transformation. Construction continues on the facility, with work to be completed by the end of 2014.

“This progress only emphasizes an historic day for the children and families of San Antonio,” added Carrier.

The hospital said it would be actively recruiting for 50 to 70 new academic positions. Private pediatricians will also continue their work there.
