18-wheeler crashes on I-35 in San Antonio, loses load of soda

Tractor trailer was transporting 40,000 pounds of Mexican soda

SAN ANTONIO - An 18-wheeler transporting 40,000 pounds of Mexican soda crashed on Interstate 35 near downtown early Friday morning, causing a massive liquid spill that forced the freeway to be closed.

Police said the big rig hit some barriers that divide the upper and lower levels of the northbound lanes of the interstate near the Laredo exit just after midnight. The 18-wheeler buckled and flipped onto its side.

The crash and spill prompted police to close the upper and lower levels of the freeway. The lower level was opened to traffic between 5:30 a.m. and 6 a.m.

The upper level of the freeway was expected to open after the morning rush hour.

The driver wasn't hurt.
