Women's Chamber series teaches 'Smart Women'

San Antonio Women’s Chamber of Commerce presents 'Smart Women' program on financial knowledge

Two dozen working women and students are getting a rare look at the world of financial security in the hopes that they will retire wealthy and happy at the end of their careers.

It’s a series of programs presented by the San Antonio Women’s Chamber of Commerce, based on the idea that women can take control of their finances and become more than working women and mothers.

Barbara Magor, a financial Planner with EFS Generation Income Planning in La Vernia, led the latest session, explaining how the first step is to take a financial snapshot of your life.

That includes your investments, estate plans, retirement plans, insurance, debt management, and assistance to loved ones.

Her background includes learning the financial ropes from her stockbroker dad while growing up.

“My father was a stockbroker and I knew in bull market years I was able to have new clothes. In bear market years (I had) tight shoes,” she explained.

She currently is also writing a column on women and money in the La Vernia News.

Her audience seemed to soak it up.

Jefferson Bank branch manager Sherri Moore said, “Life comes into play so you really have to educated when it comes to making those decisions."

Even young women like Nathalye Orozco are learning the value.

"I do have student loans and I think it is really important to know how to put my financial life in order, so I think these sessions are really important," she said.

Dr. Yvonne Katz is the chair of the Smart Women series for the chamber.

“When they are 20 years old, they have to plan for when they end up at 80 years old," she said. "They don't think about that now. We are helping them look at what they need to do at 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, and yes, some 70-year-olds."
