Family accuses jailers of neglect in inmate's death

Alvin Boyd County died after suffering seizure in jail

Alvin Boyd County died in the Bexar County Jail on Feb. 28 after suffering a seizure — but in an interview Wednesday, County’s sister accused jailers inside of ignoring her brother when he needed help.

County was sentenced to serve a 10 days for theft, and had just entered the jail when he started seizing, according to his nephew who is also incarcerated.

“My nephew said a nurse and another jailer walked by without even helping Alvin at all,” said Carolyn Johnson, County’s sister.

County was transported to the hospital, but died on the way.

The Sheriff’s Office countered the family’s claims of negligence, however, and said immediate action was taken as soon as County’s cell mate alerted guards to the seriousness of the situation.

“It’s our job to protect people when they are inside of our jail,” said Bexar County Sheriff's spokesman Paul Berry.

He said an investigation conducted by two Sheriff’s detectives also concluded that no one inside the jail was negligent.
