'Free-ride' program to be offered to BCSO deputies

Yellow Cab to offer deputies free cab rides, if they’ve had ‘one too many’

A free-ride program designed to get off-duty deputies home safe was announced Tuesday by Deputy Sheriff’s Association of Bexar County President Joel Janssen.

The initiative, which has the support of Bexar County Sheriff Susan Pamerleau, will present deputies with vouchers for free cab rides that will be honored at any time by Yellow Cab of San Antonio.

The union will pick up the tab.

The move comes after three deputies have been arrested for suspicion of DUI since Jan. 1.

“When relaxation turns into intoxication, and then that deputy gets behind the wheel, it becomes unacceptable,” said Pamerleau.

The Sheriff said strict standards for off-duty professionalism are already in place, responding to a question about whether deputies just needed to be more responsible.

“We want to make sure that when our people have one too many, they will have a safe way to get home,” said Pamerleau.
