StartupBus teams compete in San Antonio

Dozens of young entrepreneurs are in San Antonio this week sharing their ideas they developed within the last three days while riding across the country in a bus.

It's called the StartupBus competition and this is the second year that it has made its way to Rackspace.

This year, the six Startup buses are coming from all over, including the West Coast, New York and Mexico.

Josh Spefried is a lieutenant in the Air Force who traveled with his team from New York.

Spefried said he knows the struggles veterans face as they try to find jobs and transition into civilian life, which is why he and his team of other aspiring entrepreneurs came up with a way to help.

"There's a huge unemployment rate," said Spefried. "But not because there are no jobs available. It's because they don't know how to translate their job experience. So what does is allow veterans to translate their military work experience to civilian job skills."

Spefried's team is one of 30 teams competing at Rackspace this week in hopes of launching a technology start-up.

All 30 teams have come up with their ideas over a 72-hour bus ride across the country, working with a team of complete strangers.

"It was a great experience," said Tatiana Bakaeva, a StartupBus traveler. "It was really awesome. I think we had one of the strongest teams because we all had really diverse experience ."

"I think part of the thing that you have to realize is that you can do it and you can execute on this and that's what they've done," said Tiffaney Fox Quintana, a marketing director at Rackspace. "I think that's half the battle is learning that they can do what they thought about."

Judges at Rackspace heard from 30 teams on Wednesday and had to select only six to move on. Two of those six teams will be selected for the grand finale in Austin, just in time for the SXSW conference.
