A look at some weekend events happening around town
SAN ANTONIO - Luminaria lights up downtown again this weekend and this year, it's stretching out. The evening arts festival is expanding to take up even more downtown streets around Hemisfair Park, Saturday night, from 7:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. If the new, sprawling size of the event seems daunting, click here for the full map and schedule.
Also Saturday, the San Antonio community is invited to the Memorial Festival and Car Show, benefiting the families of SAPD officers killed in the line of duty. There's a full slate of activities for the whole family, including awards for the car shows, a performance from Ballet Folklorico, living history performers and rides and games for kids. And for pet owners and animal lovers, a unique run/walk event on Sunday. It's the 5-K-9 Walk/Run which features a one-mile run and a 5-k for both humans and their pets. It starts at Petco Headquarters at 654 Richland Hills Drive. The races start at 8:00 a.m., but get there early for registration. All proceeds go to Animal Care Services and other animal welfare groups.
If you are in the mood for paella, don't miss the 4th Annual Corona Paella Challenge. It's hosted by La Gloria Chef Johnny Hernandez and is at the Pearl from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. Sample some delicious paella from top chefs in San Antonio and even celebrity chef Jehanir Mehta. Other Spanish favorites will be on hand like sangria, Spanish wine and craft beers.
