6th annual Luminaria draws thousands to HemisFair Park

More than 600 artists displayed works in variety of mediums

Despite the threat of inclement weather thousands of people packed HemisFair Park Saturday for the sixth annual Luminaria.

The yearly art extravaganza is the largest single-evening art event in Texas.

More than 600 artists from San Antonio and around the world displayed works in a variety mediums such as painting, dance, new media, music and theatre.

Tim Grivas spent his first Luminaria sitting behind a computer, projecting 3D images on a 15-foot high giant head.

Grivas said the turnout far exceeded his expectations.

"I was surprised that the Luminaria project was so big and I hope it keeps coming," Grivas said. "Fortunately the first time I get to see it, I'm actually a part of it."

Four year Luminaria veteran Seme Jatib said participating in the celebration has inspired her to test her artistic limits.

The local artist danced her first two years at Luminaria, but Saturday Jatib was showcasing a video installation piece entitled "Peering Through the Window."

Jatib said it's the interaction with the crowd that brings her back every year.

"I love that instant feedback," Jatib said. "That's the magic of Luminaria. You are in touch with the audience and you hear what they're saying about your art."

This year's celebration also included a number of interactive displays. Spectators moved their fingertips across the screen of Amazon Kindle connected to a video projector.

Their movements, represented by colorful shapes and patterns, were displayed on a series of thin sheets hanging above a fountain.

Alfred Nerio attended Luminaria for the first time. He brought his children, who he said love art, to show them that the possibilities to express themselves through art are endless.

"They get into it and want to do it too," said Alfred Nerio. "The whole thing is really inspirational."
