Woman sentenced to 30 years for killing boyfriend
Beatrice Ibanez sentenced in death of Alfredo 'Freddie' Ramirez
Beatrice Ibanez, 44, was sentenced to 30 years in prison Wednesday for stabbing her boyfriend to death during what she described as a drunken brawl.
The sentence was in exchange for Ibanez’s plea of no contest to murder charges.
Before she was sentenced Ibanez apologized to the family of Alfredo “Freddie” Ramirez.
“I’m sorry for everything that happened,” Ibanez said. “I didn’t mean to do it. I made a mistake.”
Ibanez testified that the two had been drinking heavily on Sept. 24, 2011.
She said her memory of the day was clouded by alcohol.
She said she remembers they had a violent argument and admitted she stabbed Ramirez, 45, twice in the chest.
Following the stabbing, Ibanez gave police several different accounts of what preceded the stabbing.
At one point, she said it was in self-defense.
Ramirez’ sister, Maria Ramirez-Herrera, said she forgave Ibanez, but had reservations about the sincerity of her apology.
“We have to take her word for it because that’s all there is,” Ramirez-Herrera said. “It’s between her and God and she’s accountable to God.”
Ibanez must serve half of her sentence before she is eligible for parole.
