City opens 4 pools for spring break week

Pools to remain open through Sunday

The city’s Parks & Recreation Department opened four city pools Tuesday to serve kids and families during spring break week.

The pools now open include Woodlawn Lake Park on Alexander Ave., Heritage on Ellison, Southside Lions on Hiawatha and Lady Bird Johnson on Nacogdoches.

The pools are fully staffed and open from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. through Sunday.

They are also open for lap swim on Wednesday and Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

“We try to place them strategically around the city so everybody has an opportunity to go to the pools,” said Kenny Gonzales, the aquatic supervisor with the city’s Parks & Recreation department. “Swimming is probably one of the best exercises you can do, so we want people to get out and have some fun and get active.”

So how’s the water feel?

“It feels good. At first when you get in, it’s a little chilly. But you get used to it,” said Gabriel Garcia, who took a dip at Woodlawn on Tuesday.

“I kind of have a brain freeze right now,” added Samuel Williamson.

A thermometer gun showed the water was between 60 and 68 degrees in the deeper ends of Woodlawn.

But in the shallow end, a thermometer that hangs in the water read about 74 degrees.

“It feels like you’re in a glacier or something, but you get used to it,” said Garcia. “It feels pretty good.”

“Very refreshing,” Williamson said. “Obviously, there’s not a lot of people here, so all the little kids aren’t peeing in the pool.”

Those four pools will reopen as a summer preview from May 4 through June 13. All 24 city pools will open for the summer on June 15.
