A fast-moving fire destroyed a home in northwest San Antonio and caused the roof to collapse.

San Antonio fire crews responded to the fire in the 11000 block of Moonlit Park around 1:15 a.m., and said the blaze was unusually large with flames shooting through the roof.

"(There was) heavy fire immediately when we got on scene. Everybody got here really quick. We're all close in the area," said Brandon Blandford, with the San Antonio Fire Department.

Fire officials said the family inside managed to get out safely before the roof collapsed, but one firefighter was injured in the collapse. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Officials said the fire spread quickly and flames spread through the attic. Crews battled the fire for up to 20 minutes. They said a large amount of items in the garage prolonged their battle.

"It just clutters everything up. It makes the entryway in and out of the fire a big problem. It makes trouble for the guys to get in, get moving around, get the equipment in there. It makes for a very hard attack," Blandford said.

One neighbor, who watched the fire from across the street, said watching firefighters struggle to get inside the garage was enough to change his housekeeping habits.

"Mine gets in a mess sometimes, but then I try to clean it out periodically," Bill Edwards said.

Two neighboring homes were evacuated as a precaution and no major injuries were reported.

The arson unit is investigating a cause. The home is considered a total loss.
