Southside land to be comm­ercialized

250,­000-sqaure­-foot property bought for $5.4 million

Southside residents could soon be seeing more commercialization in their neighborhood. 

On Thursday, the San Antonio City Council voted unanimously to build on 250,000 square feet of land on S. Zarzamora and Culberson. 

Resident David Valdez is excited. He’s lived in the area for 30 years, and has waited a long time for bigger and better stores to come into his neighborhood.

“I'm just glad that something is going to happen because the neighborhood will grow and prosper,” said Valdez.

And growing the area is what Councilman David Medina Jr. has been doing ever since he was elected to District 5 in 2009. He’s aggressively pushed for job creation and revitalizations for the 130,000 constituents in his district.

“Turning old dirty properties, blighted properties, into new commercial corridors,” said Medina, the youngest city councilman in San Antonio history.

At this time, no anchor store has been named for the 250,000 square foot site, but the developer, GFR Development Services LLC, has constructed strip malls that count Walmart stores among their tenants.

Medina believes getting a big store like Walmart would be good for the area. 

He said, “Making sure we get a tenant (or a) business located there that will provide goods and services to the community, and jobs for the community that's been demanded for many years now.” 

GFR Development Services LLC bought the land from the city for $5.4 million. 

According to the Center City Development Office, the land was appraised at $4.9 million.
