Thieves steal race funds for shooting victim

A local 5K run to support a shooting victim takes a big hit the day before the race.

5K Race organizer Cynthia Cosgrove was at Sideliners Grill on Saturday, getting everything ready for the packet pick-up, when thieves stole the race money from her car.

"We had big boxes of t-shirts and they were pretty heavy," said Cosgrove. "So, we walked inside the restaurant, set them down and everything was gone."

When Cosgrove came back out to her vehicle, her laptop, with all the race information, was gone. Her purse, which had a good portion of the funds for the race, was also missing.

The race was to benefit Eddie Moreno, an Alamo Heights High School basketball player, who was shot in a road rage incident and paralyzed from the neck down.

Cosgrove, who is a friend of the family, organized the first Eddie Moreno 5K last year.

This year, she had hoped she could raise even more money to help the family out.

"This is just something that we are trying to do for him to help with the medical bills and to help with his rehabilitation," said Cosgrove. "He's doing so well that just for something like this to happen is heartbreaking."

Cosgrove said she hopes the thieves will understand what they took and return it.

"They not only took from me, but they also took from Eddie and what we are trying to do for him," she said.

If you would like to help out, the Eddie Moreno 5K is scheduled for Sunday at 8 a.m. at the Blue Bonnet Palace in Selma. If you would like to make up for some of those lost funds, send an email to eddiemoreno5kfund@yahoo.com.
