SAN ANTONIO - In San Antonio, people are seeing the devastation in West, Texas, and are trying to help by donating blood.

The South Texas Blood and Tissue Center already started sending blood and platelets to West overnight, but the are calling on the community to donate, so they can continue to help.

"We sent over platelets and O negative and that's what we are trying to replenish now," said Roger Ruiz, with the the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center. "We are on standby and we need to send more units over."

While all blood types are being accepted, Ruiz said they are really in need of type O Negative and platelet donations.

Ruiz said 450 people have donated or signed up to donate so far,  which is more than double the donations they would usually get on a Thursday.

"I didn't even think about donating blood would be able to help in any way," said Walter Holm, a donor. "And I just saw it on TV and I was like I don't know what I could do, but when you all posted that it just helped a lot to know that I can help somehow by donating blood."

Ruiz said they are asking people to schedule an appointment so, they don't have to wait.

You can do that by calling 731- 5590.

The center is open until 8 p.m.
