Mayor Castro kicks off 'College Week'
'Destination College' aims to inspire students of all ages
SAN ANTONIO - Mayor Julian Castro on Monday kicked off "College Week" on the steps of City Hall.
Castro used the event to launch "Destination College," a week-long event aimed at inspiring students of all ages to pursue a higher education.
The goal is to elevate awareness of the SA2020 objective, which aims to increase college completion to 50 percent.
"It's celebrating the success of young people who have worked hard for their dream of going to college," Castro said. "They're making San Antonio proud. We want to say to them congratulations and hold them up as role models."
Last year's event drew in nearly 2,500 students. The community event, now in its third year, has support from educational institutions, nonprofit organizations and the public sector.
Some key events during the week include: Elementary School Night, Middle School Night, Career Block Party and the Mayor's College Signing Ceremony.
