Convicted sex offender faces life in prison
Fredys Varela confessed to sexually assaulting 2 boys
SAN ANTONIO - A jury found Fredys Varela, 31, guilty of three counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child and of five counts of indecency with a child on Friday.
According to testimony last week, Varela confessed molesting two boys, ages 7 and 8 years old, 10 years ago.
He later confessed the abuse to his pastor and to police.
His lawyer asked the jury for mercy during closing arguments in the punishment phase of Varela’s trial on Monday.
“He has repented and has asked for forgiveness,” said Pastor Carlos Casten.
Prosecutors asked that he be sentenced to the high end of the punishment range.
“He may not be a monster but his behavior was that of a monster,” Prosecutor Chris Di Martino told the jury during closing arguments.
The punishment range for aggravated sexual assault of a child is from five to 99 years to life in prison.
The range for indecency with a child if from two to 20 years in prison.
