Latray 'Pooh' Whitley found guilty of murder

Whitley convicted of killing Corey 'Gumby' Cumby

SAN ANTONIO - A jury returned a quick guilty verdict Friday morning against a man charged in a November 2009 expressway ambush

Jurors took only 35 minutes to convict Latray "Pooh" Whitley of killing Corey "Gumby" Cumby as the victim drove along Interstate 35 near Walzem Road.

The punishment phase of the trial is scheduled to begin Friday afternoon. Whitley could be sentenced to a maximum sentence of life in prison.

On Thursday, a man who shared federal prison space with Whitley testified that the defendant admitted to shooting the victim. Reginald Green testified that Whitley said the shooting was the result of a bad business deal.

Both men were in prison on charges not related to Cumby's murder. Green denied he was given special consideration in prison in exchange for his testimony.
