Thunder, lightning, hail rain down on New Braunfels

Police: No major damage reported in New Braunfels

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas - A storm that moved through the region blasted New Braunfels with thunder, lightning, heavy rain and even hail, just in time for the Friday morning commute.

However, New Braunfels police said early on that there was no major damage reported in their city.

Craig Pierson, who lives on the southern part of the city, said his home lost electricity briefly around 6:30 a.m.

Soon after, he experienced another unexpected event, courtesy of nature.

“I wasn't surprised by the storm. Obviously everybody was saying it's coming We've all been waiting for it and looking for it,” said Pierson. “But the hail is always a little surprising because you never know what you're going to get. "

What he got outside his Stonewall Street home were dime-sized pieces of hail, bouncing off his grass and hitting his car.

After a brief inspection, though, Pierson declared his vehicle was damage-free.

Nick Poloson, meanwhile, saw quite a bit of damage on his way to New Braunfels from Bulverde, caused by the wet weather.

"The traffic has been the big thing,” Poloson said. “We've driven probably about 25 miles now. We've seen a few wrecks, even one with a school bus and a car.”

"This is supposed to be a vacation day for me,” he said.

While he said he missed most of nature’s light show -- the lightning and thunder -- Poloson spent part of the morning staring at brake lights.

Heavy rain, at one point, also made the going slow for drivers on a section of Walnut Street, where water quickly had begun to pool.

Although it created a sloppy and sometimes scary morning for people, storms like this one, Pierson said, are just what the area needs.

"I love the weather. It's nice. We need the rain for sure,” he said.
