SAN ANTONIO - A pair of San Antonio City Council races are headed for June runoffs.

The closest city council race of the 2013 elections was in District 8. Ron Nirenberg and Rolando Briones were both vying for the North Side's city council seat after Reed Williams decided not to seek a third term.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Nirenberg received 49 percent of the vote and Briones received 45 percent.

Nirenberg and Briones say they they have stuck to the issues and they were pleased with the results despite not having a clear winner.

"Everyday when I walked on doors, it was the best experience I could have ever had. You know, going to someone's doorstep, asking for their vote. It just made my day. I knocked on over 8,000 doors by myself," Rolando Briones said.

"We'll work just as hard in this month as we have for the previous 12 months before that, and we'll fight every day for San Antonio and for average neighbors everywhere in this district," said Ron Nirenberg.

A third candidate, Mike Kueber, recieved 5 percent of the vote.

In District 5, incumbent David Medina is headed for a runoff with Shirley Gonzales. Medina received 38 percent of the vote while Gonzales received 31 percent.

The District 5 race featured the most candidates at six, but now with a narrower field both candidates must get back on the campaign trail and try to persuade those voters who chose other candidates to join their coalition.

"60 percent of the people said they did not want David Medina to be their councilman any longer so I think that is important and it definitely motivates us forward to get some of those supporters on our side and move forward with that," said Shirley Gonzales.

"District 5 can not afford to have someone in the drivers seat without experience and right now currently I've been in office for 4 years serving the district and we have the experience to get the job done," said David Medina.

A runoff for both races is scheduled for June 15.
