Fallen Bexar County sheriff's deputies remembered

19 sheriffs or deputies have been killed on duty since 1840

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas - A small group of people gathered Thursday evening on the steps of the Bexar County Sheriff's Office to remember the fallen deputies of Bexar County.

The candlelight vigil was attended by those close to the fallen heroes. There have been 19 sheriffs or deputies killed on duty since 1840.

Sheriff Susan Pamerleau hosted the event. "It's a family event. It's a family gathering where we can honor those in our family who aren't with us," said Pamerleau.

Among the group was the wife of Sgt. Kenneth Vann. He was killed in a hail of gunfire as he waited at an intersection in 2011.

Yvonne Vann said the vigil helped her appreciate those who continue to pry for her and her family.

"We also have family and friends that are here at the sheriff’s office that are still feeling our hurt," said Vann.

This May 28 will mark two years since her husband's death. The vigil Thursday night was just a preview of the public ceremony Friday.

The public vigil will be held at 10 a.m. in the courtyard at the Bexar County Jail.
