Newlyweds reunited after overseas deployment

Sunday was couple’s one-year wedding anniversary

SAN ANTONIO - A local airman returned home from his first tour of duty on Monday, a day after his 1-year wedding anniversary.

Mykhol Gonzalez was greeted by his daughter, Layla, 3, his wife, Melissa, and several of his family members at San Antonio International Airport after a 5-month deployment to Afghanistan.

“It was challenging, but you work through it and you take the advice that others have given you,” said Gonzalez.

The couple said they relied heavily on emails and Skype to keep them connected, and their daughter often asked when her father would return home.

“I didn't think it was going to hit me like this, but when you see little faces like this, it definitely makes it all worth more,” Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez serves in the Air Force’s Aviation Resource Management Unit.
