SAISD names interim as lone superintendent finalist

Dr. Sylvester Perez came out of retirement to lead district

SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Independent School Board of Trustees voted to name their current interim superintendent, Dr. Sylvester Perez, as the lone finalist for superintendent.

Perez, who came out of retirement to lead the district on a temporary basis, said he wants to continue serving the city’s children.

“This job is an important job,” Perez said. “This job is very personal, we're in a very pivotal time in SAISD, and if I could offer any help, I was more than glad to do so."

The appointment comes after over a year of searching for a superintendent candidate, which included the naming of Dr. Manuel Isquierdo as the lone finalist in April.

Isquierdo withdrew his name a few days later, after reports of financial and legal troubles.

Perez, a native of San Antonio who attended schools in both the San Antonio and Harlandale school districts, said it’s time for the district to move forward, citing literacy as one of his biggest concerns.

“We must be laser focused, on improving literacy for all of our children,” Perez said.  “When we have over half of our 7th graders that are not reading at grade level, that speaks loud.”

Perez has served as an educator for 38 years in various capacities, including serving as superintendent at school districts across the state.

In accordance with Texas law, there is a 21-day waiting period before Perez is officially appointed and given a contract.

Perez succeeds Dr. Robert Duron, who resigned in early 2012.
