17 year-old boy missing in Schertz; swept way in Cibolo Creek

Search suspended late Saturday night

SCHERTZ, Texas - The search was suspended Saturday night for a 17-year-old boy who was swept away by floodwaters in Cibolo Creek.
By 8 p.m., the water in the creek receded just enough for search crews to look for the missing boy.
Schertz police said crews in the water and in a helicopter had a tough time locating him because of the overgrowth of brush and dense trees.Police said Cibolo Creek is usually dry, but after the heavy rains Saturday, it was at least 4-feet deep.

"Normally, you could just walk right across it, but this is the result of all the rain," said Cpl. Jonathan Patrick of the Schertz Police Department.Police said at 4:30 Saturday, two boys attempted to cross Cibolo Creek from the Universal City side to the Schertz side when fast, moving waters from the heavy rains were too much to handle for one of the boys.
"One individual made it out, the other person at this time is unfound. We don't know where he is," Patrick said.
Several people from Pickrell Park across the street from the creek watched search crews scour the water. Carmen Pedraza said she saw workers save one of the boys.

"He had his eyes open and he looked OK, thank God," Pedraza said.
Police are encouraging people to be more cautious if the creek should swell again.
"You have to respect that body of water," Patrick said. "It's a strong current. It can move cars. It can move houses. It's something you've got to respect."
