Body of missing San Antonio boy recovered in Comal River
Victim identified as Xabier Martinez, 6
NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas - Divers recovered the body of a 6-year-old San Antonio boy who was missing in the Comal River.
The New Braunfels Fire Department Dive Team found Xabier Martinez in 25 feet of water at Prince Solms Park at 8:40 a.m. Monday, said Capt. John McDonald of the New Braunfels Police Department.
Xabier was playing on some steps that lead into the water with members of his family when he disappeared in the Hinman Island Park area just before 5:30 p.m. Sunday, McDonald said.
"At some point when they were trying to verify the location of all the kids in their group they realized he was missing," McDonald said. "They dld a search on their own and when they didn't find him they notified police."
A search, which included a Texas DPS helicopter, was launched early Sunday evening but was suspended a few hours later due to darkness.
McDonald said the weather also made the search difficult.
"Yesterday, it was still pretty murky from the rains," McDonald said. "The water clarity was much, much better this morning and assisted them in their efforts."
The drowning was the first in New Braunfels of the recreational season.
