Fire that spread from dumpster to cars, homes ruled accidental

Arson investigators still looking for exact cause

SAN ANTONIO - A fire that spread from a garbage dumpster to vehicles in a carport and then to a building at the Lakeside Villa apartments has been ruled accidental.

However, as of Tuesday morning, arson investigators had not located the exact cause of the blaze, according to Christian Bove, spokesman for the San Antonio Fire Department.

Bove said despite reports that the fire might’ve been sparked by burning charcoal that had been thrown into the dumpster, the cause remains under investigation.

The fire broke out around 8 p.m. Monday at the complex, located on Laurens Lane near Oakwell Farms Parkway.

Firefighters said they found flames coming from two trash dumpsters and four vehicles parked under a nearby carport that had collapsed.

They said they called a second alarm after the fire spread into the attic of a building nearby.

In the end, four cars and five units had either smoke or water damage.

Firefighters estimated the damage at about $300,000.

Scott Simrall returned to his home Tuesday morning to find his car had been reduced to a burned out shell.

He said he had tried to move the vehicle right after the fire started, but it was too intense for him to even reach the car door.

His apartment, however, made it through much better.

The fire shattered his windows but didn’t touch anything inside, he said.

“I was shocked,” Simrall said. “When I came back in, I didn’t see anything burned or anything at all.”

But Simrall said there is quite a bit of smoke inside so he will need to find another place to live.

Firefighters said there were no injuries reported.

They did, however, rescue three exotic pets, including a snake, bearded dragon lizard and hedgehog, from one of the apartments.

Management at the complex Tuesday morning would not say what is being done to assist the people who’ve lost their homes.
