Private donation funds new Animal Care Services facility

New center to provide more space, services

SAN ANTONIO - The city is now $1 million closer to the goal of having a no-kill animal shelter, thanks to a donation from Petco and the Petco Foundation.

The company announced the donation during a press conference at the new Animal Care Services facility in  Brackenridge Park.

The multi-use facility is currently under construction on the grounds of the former ACS shelter, which was demolished in 2008.

It will run in conjunction with the current facility to provide additional space and more services.

"This facility is great because it's going to mean that we boost up significantly," said Mayo Julian Castro. "The pets that are being spayed and neutered -- and the ones that get adopted -- so San Antonio will be able to become a no-kill city in years to come."

In return for the donation, the spay/neuter clinic and pet pavilion area will bear the Petco name for five years.

The adoption building will be permanently named after Paul Jolly, the former executive director of the Petco Foundation.

"There are no adoption services (or) spay/neuter facilities around here, so this is really a jewel that will be added to the neighborhood to provide all of those kinds of services," said Animal Care Services Director Kathy Davis.

The 82,000-square-foot facility will house more than 80 dogs and cats looking for forever homes. The clinic will provide 79 spay neuter services a day.

"We still have way too many pets that are coming in and not enough places to showcase them for adoption. We have really great cats and dogs that are really just dying for a home, literally," said Davis. "That will help us bridge that gap and get us closer to no-kill."

Construction is slightly ahead of schedule. It's planned to open in October at the latest.
