4 fire­fighters killed in 5-alarm fire at southwest Houston hotel

HOUSTON - Officials confirm that at least four firefighters were killed in the five-alarm fire at a southwest Houston hotel Friday afternoon.

Officials said the fire started around noon at the Southwest Inn in the 6800 block of the Southwest Freeway near Hornwood.

The fire started in the sports bar portion of the hotel.

Officials confirmed that four firefighters died as a result of the fire. No other information about the deaths was released.

Officials said at least five firefighters were injured and being treated at Houston hospitals.

Traffic on the Southwest Freeway is backed up in both directions. The inbound side of Highway 59 is slowly moving.
