Willie Monroe sentenced in beating death

Willie Marshall kicked, beaten on Halloween night

SAN ANTONIO - Citing what he called the victim’s “horrific death," Judge Ron Rangel sentenced 28-year-old Willie Monroe to 14 years in prison for the beating death of Willie Marshall.

Marshall, 24, had just moved to San Antonio from Louisiana the day before Halloween 2009.

Prosecutors say he and Monroe had been involved in a heated argument at an Oak Chase Street apartment on Halloween night.

During the argument, Monroe, who outweighed Marshall by nearly 100 pounds, beat and kicked Marshall to death.

Before sentencing Monroe, Rangel noted the brutality of the attack.

“Ruptured liver, ruptured stomach. All kinds of broken ribs,” Rangel said. “I did look at the autopsy -- it was a horrific death.”

Friday’s sentencing hearing followed Monroe’s decision to have the judge assess punishment rather than take the case before a jury.

He had originally been charged with murder.

The charges were later reduced to manslaughter, lowering the punishment range to a maximum of 20 years in prison.

Monroe will have to serve half of his 14-year sentence before he is eligible for parole.
