Man, 76, charged with theft from the elderly
SAPD: Russell March conned another man, 71, out of $98,000
SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio police have arrested one man who they say not only failed to pay for the tickets, but somehow convinced another to hand over more than $80,000.
If the claims against him are true, 76-year-old Russell March talked another man out of $98,000.
An arrest affidavit says 71-year-old Eilert Weitzel told San Antonio police he began making loans to March in 2008, expecting to get it all back.
Weitzel said it was the classifieds ads that brought him and March together.
He says he put an ad in the paper, selling Spurs season tickets and March answered that ad, saying he was going to buy them.
He says March initially gave him a post-dated check for more than $14,000 as payment.
But Weitzel says he soon asked for some of his money back and then tens of thousands of dollars more.
Weitzel's his wife said March asked for repeated handouts, which he game him.
March, meanwhile, will face a charge of theft from the elderly.
