Customers step in during restaurant robbery, hold suspect

San Antonio police: Suspect punched waitress in struggle for cash

SAN ANTONIO - A group of customers at a Mexican restaurant jumped on a robbery suspect after he punched a waitress in the face, then held him down until officers arrived.

San Antonio police arrived at the scene around 11:45 p.m. Wednesday.

They said the man walked into the Mi Guadalajara restaurant on Culebra Road and began panhandling.

However, an employee's attempt at generosity was not appreciated, police said.

"(The suspect) came in. He was begging for money," said Sgt. Steve Almanza with SAPD. "Some of the employees felt sorry for him.  Somebody opened the register, at which he grabbed a bunch of money out of the register."

Police said the waitress was hit in the face when she struggled with the suspect for the cash.

At that point, the customers intervened. When officers arrived, they arrested the man who is expected to face a charge of robbery.

The suspect's name has not been released.
