“They took a life without hesitation and it wasn't his time to go yet,” said his mother, Veronica Carrillo, outside her family’s home Monday morning. "I just wish that if anybody saw anything or they know, if they could just tell us."

Police officers at the scene Sunday said Albert was walking to a nearby park with two friends around 5 p.m. when they exchanged words with three people in a car.

One person in the car fired at least one shot, hitting Albert in the chest, police said.

His family said the teen also was robbed of about $100.

The shooting happened about a block away from their home in the 2100 block of Sunbend Falls.

Veronica Carrillo said her younger son came racing into the home and told her and her husband the news.

She said she then ran to the scene and tried her best to keep her firstborn alive.

“I performed CPR until the fire department got here,” she said. “It's the hardest thing, as a mom, to see your baby struggle because he couldn't breathe."

Albert was taken by ambulance to University Hospital but died of his wounds.

His death came at a time when he was trying to turn his life around, his mother said.

Albert had been attending classes at Burbank High School and trying to stay on the right track, Carrillo said.

"He had his troubles but we fought a lot for him to stay out of it. But, unfortunately, wrong place, wrong time,” she said.

The loss of her son, Carrillo said, has been one of the toughest things she has had to deal with.

But also difficult is dealing with the idea that his killers are on the loose.

Carrillo said she hopes someone with information will help bring her family a sense of closure and Albert’s killers to justice.
