Mother of young sex abuse victim speaks out

Douglas Edward Snyder, 55, plead guilty to inappropriately touching girl, sentenced to 5 years in jail

SAN ANTONIO - The mother of a 6-year-old girl who was sexually assaulted is speaking out about her daughter's ordeal, and the man who was sentenced for the crime.

Douglas Edward Snyder, 55, plead guilty to inappropriately touching the young girl and was sentenced to five years in prison earlier this week.

Clara Wilder said even though the ordeal is over, there's still a lot of healing to be done. "He was always helping, always offering to help, and he took advantage of that trust," Wilder said.

Snyder admitted to police he would often touch Wilder's daughter inappropriately.

He would pick her up from school, take her to get a snack and then tickle her in her private area.

Investigators said the pattern of abuse happened about 20 times.

"He admitted to everything. Their stories matched up perfectly, she made an outcry, and she did the right thing by telling me," Wilder said.

The incidents of sexual abuse happened in January of last year and now Wilder said her family has received some closure.

"I don't think five years is enough at all. He only has to serve half before he's eligible for parole, but I hope he gets help," Wilder said.

Through counseling and victims' advocacy groups, Wilder says she hopes they can all put this ordeal behind them.

"As a mom, you don't want to ever think that something like that happens to your child, your daughter. Especially by someone who is close to you, or that she trusts and knows, and that we trust and know," Wilder said.

Wilder said she has been working with numerous agencies who deal with child cases such as this one.

She says her daughter has showed a dramatic improvement, with the help of professional counseling.
